Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy has advised that the youth of the country should work 70 hours every week.  He said that India's work productivity is the lowest in the world.  It needs to be increased.  Murthy said these things while talking to former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai for the podcast 'The Record'.  Narayana Murthy has said that to compete with countries like China, the country's youth should work 70 hours a week as Japan and Germany did after World War II.  Asked about his outlook for the next 10, 15 years, Narayana Murthy spoke on the need to improve productivity in India and resolve government delays.

A debate has erupted on social media over NR Narayana Murthy's statement of working 70 hours a week.  One user wrote that I agree with this, work 40 hours for your employer and 30 hours for your interests.  Another user wrote that he completely disagrees with working 70 hours a week.  Wrote that according to 70 hour working week, we will be the best country, but at what cost?  What will that person achieve after working 70 hours a week?  good health?  Nice family?  Good companion?  Happiness?  What will the person achieve? One user wrote, "If someone is aiming for success after working 70 hours a week, I would like that person to define success?"
