world's inaugural AI summit commenced in London on Wednesday, attracting prominent entrepreneurs and global political figures. Representing India at this major event is Rajeev Chandrashekhar, the Minister of State for Information Technology.
The inaugural summit on Artificial Intelligence (AI) kicked off in London on Wednesday, drawing politicians, tech entrepreneurs, and scientists from around the globe to discuss AI-related threats and security measures. Several prominent Indian figures can be found among the conference speakers. Minister of State for Information Technology Rajiv Chandrashekhar represents India at the event. Notable attendees include Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of Britain, Prime Minister Georgia Meloni of Italy, Vice President Kamala Harris of America, European Union President Ursula von der Leyen, and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Wu Zhaohui, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology, represents China at the conference.
Even prior to the conference, discussions and statements on this matter have begun. Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk raised concerns in a podcast, suggesting that the fate and nature of AI depend on its creators. Musk cautioned that if AI is developed by environmentalist activists, it could jeopardize humanity's survival as they may prioritize the Earth over human interests. Meanwhile, Kamala Harris expressed in a pre-conference address that AI poses a threat to democracy and privacy. She emphasized the need to strike a balance, stating that it's not a matter of choosing between protecting the public or fostering innovation but rather finding ways to do both. Harris also announced the establishment of the United States AI Safety Institute during the event.
The primary objective of this conference is to adopt an international approach to AI development, fostering collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure that any AI system undergoes safety testing before its release, as emphasized by British PM Rishi Sunak.
However, the AI summit has faced controversy in Britain due to its perceived neglect of social issues such as job displacement caused by AI and data security concerns. There has been criticism regarding the exclusion of British Labor Party MPs from the conference.
